Weirton, W.Va. — The Weirton Heights Church of Christ along Pennsylvania Avenue is celebrating 50 years.
Steven Smithbauer, minister of the church of Christ, shares a history that began with two names more than 5 decades ago, when the church was founded in 1969.
"The history of this church, the thing that comes to mind is Ben and Laura Way, this was a couple that started the congregation here a long, long time ago," Smithbauer said.
At their hands, the congregation continued to grow.
"And it grew into hundreds and hundreds of people over the decades, and that’s where we are today," Smithbauer said.
Some of the bibles in the church show the test of their time, while other, new testaments are still in crisp, fresh condition.
Another part of the church’s history is the clothes closet, which is open from 9 a.m.-noon every Tuesday. It’s completely free, and you can call for an appointment.
